Jean Baptiste Apuatimi is one of the most senior and renowned artists on the Tiwi Islands. She began her formal career as a carver and painter soon after 1985, when her husband Declan Apuatimi passed away and instructed her to carry on his work as an artist to support her family.
Jean has lived in Nguiu on Bathurst Island for most of her life. She began working as a full time artist at Tiwi design Aboriginal Corporation in 1997. In 2007 Jean’s commitment and achievements in the arts were recognised by her inclusion in the inarguable National Indigenous Art Triennial exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia, entitled Culture Warriors, curated by Brenda L.Croft (Senior Curator of Indigenous Art)
